13 fteriarfed to do all kinds of work til the ftbovd line on Short notice and at reasonable rate aps The Cost of the Union. X)nce in a while, ludeml, frequently of late, hear objections to pensioning soldiers who engaged in the late war for the perpetuation of the Union. The Philadelphia Times, the avowed and unblushing organ monopolists, while advocating the monstrous iniquities of taxing the necessities of life for benefit of monopolists, regards the PeViiion bill recently passed by the House, with special horror. Tf it beonvs a law, says the Times, it will diminish the Treasury surplus materially. As though the existing pension laws were not sufficiently liberal, this new bill provides that every person who Served three months in the field and Is now disabled, in whole or in part, by reason of any wound, injury or disease which there is probably cause to believe originated in the line Of duty, shall be placed on the pension rolls.

It is not necessary to prove that it actually did so originate. It is sufficient that, after the lapse of twenty year0 there shall bO alleged a prohalild entse to believe. 'And this. continues the Times is not all that the new bill provides. It creates a new class of claimants parents, whose sons.

were lost in the war Hnd wlio now, after twenty ears, are without means of support other than their own labor. It is not necessary that the claimant should have been dependent on the SOB at lie time of his death. If there is probable causa to believe that the son might have supported the parents now, the parents inn-t have a pension. Nothing 13 none common than to hear men talk of the value ot the Union, its con1 inmtal grandeur, its wealth, its boundle-s 1 resuurces. Its destiny, etc.

They do not seem tu rtmeml-er that but for the sodiers this great Reputil oilld li ive beeti divided and since the soldiers preserved lie Union they tire Imnest I entitled to (Very cent they re likely to receive in the way of pensions. While in I lie service they were poorly paid at best, and often what tiny did leceiVe in the way of wages was in depreciated paper money. Tim Philadelphia Times advocates gh taxation in the interest of monopol'ps, by which the people are annually robbed of hundreds of millions 3f dollars, and by Vvbich the Government secures a vast suiplus, for which it has no legitimate inf. Now then, if this robbery lusincss is to go forward, hs advoca1 ed by the Times and other monopoly org ms, then we can see no belter use for the surplus limn to pay pensions, as provided in the bill pissed ly the House. If parens sent tin ir sons to the war never to return, they should be remembered by the Government, and the service and sacrifices of their sons should lie ibttantially recognized and rewarded.

Within a half century they will all be dead, and the pension business will lie numbered ainon'it the things o' I lie ist, and then the counry will lie so rich that the few dollars paid to Union Soldiers, instead of being a subject for regrets, will be regarded as the crowning glory of the ll-pubiic. Munopo'y organs should tie shamed into sdei.ee. They clamor for high taxation in the interest cf men who mto Bimply mercenaries, demand leglislaMon that they may i ule the people under cover of law, and oetiselessly antagonize legislation in the interest of the great body of the people. After awhile, after what the Union cost in money, and. while the organs of monopoly may whine grand sum fetal, others (and my will le the majority) will hand in the verdict.

Cheap enough. A bill has been introduced in the Jfew Yotk legsl ature compelling mmufactures of canned goods to put the tlate of canning thereon. Such a law should be enforced in every State of the Union and then the consumer would not be imp ised upon by having stale goods so to them as is now the cate.
